A Class A fire door provides 60 minutes (1 hour) of fire resistance. In South Africa, Class A fire doors are classified to SANS 1253 and tested to SANS 10177-2. This assembly achieved R60/E60/I60 — 60 minutes of structural stability, flame integrity, and thermal insulation.
These are the three fire resistance criteria: Stability (R) – the door remains structurally intact for 60 minutes; Integrity (E) – no flames or hot gases pass through for 60 minutes; Insulation (I) – the unexposed face temperature remains within limits for 60 minutes.
Class A fire doors are typically required in stairwells, escape corridors, and between fire compartments in commercial buildings, hotels, hospitals, and multi-storey residential developments. Requirements are governed by SANS 10400-T and your project’s fire strategy.
