The WD54 is an economy level solid timber window — an A-grade meranti window at an accessible price point, making it the most widely used timber window in South Africa for low-cost residential developments. It features three panes with two side-opening casements and a fixed centre pane, and is supplied with cranked steel hinges and a steel peg and stay. The slightly thinner timber sections keep costs down without compromising on timber quality or craftsmanship.
Like all timber windows in this range, the WD54 opens outward and is supplied without glass — glass must be sourced and fitted separately by your glazier.
The Economy Level range is an A-grade solid meranti timber window range designed for low-cost residential developments. It uses the same quality timber and craftsmanship as the mid-level range, but with slightly thinner timber sections and cranked steel hinges and peg stays instead of friction hinges and brass handles. This keeps the price accessible while maintaining timber quality — making it the most widely used timber window range in South Africa.
The key differences are the timber section thickness and hardware. Economy Level windows use thinner sections (33mm head, cill, and stiles vs 44mm on the mid-level) and are fitted with cranked steel hinges and a steel peg and stay rather than easy-clean friction hinges and solid brass handles. The timber grade and construction quality are the same across both ranges.
This window has three panes: the left and right panes are side-hinged casements that open outward for ventilation, while the centre pane is fixed and does not open. This is one of the most common configurations for wider timber windows in South Africa, providing ventilation on both sides with a stable fixed centre panel.
No. Glass is not included. Timber windows are supplied as frames only — glass must be sourced and fitted separately by your glazier. This is standard across all timber windows in the Economy Level and mid-level ranges.
This window opens outward. South African timber windows are supplied for outward opening only as standard. Inward opening is not available unless specifically requested and is extremely rare.
The WD54 is supplied with yellow passivated cranked steel hinges and a yellow passivated steel peg and stay. The yellow passivation treatment provides corrosion resistance. No additional hardware purchase is required for the opening casements.
The frame opening is 1580mm wide × 1460mm high × 55mm deep. Always verify your wall opening dimensions before ordering to ensure a correct fit.
The current lead time is 14–21 days from order confirmation. Nationwide delivery across South Africa is available.
The WD54 and the full Economy Level timber window range are available online at doorsdirect.co.za, with nationwide delivery across South Africa.
