What is Meranti Wood?
Meranti is a South-East Asian hardwood widely used in window and door manufacturing across South Africa. It is prized for its stability, moderate density, and excellent paint adhesion. Meranti is more dimensionally stable than pine, making it well-suited to exterior applications where the timber is exposed to seasonal moisture changes. It is typically supplied unfinished and should be primed and painted before installation for optimal durability.
Does This Window Come Glazed?
No — this window is supplied unglazed (without glass). Glazing is fitted on-site by your glazier after installation. This allows you to specify your preferred glass type — clear, obscure, laminated, or double-glazed units — to suit your project requirements.
What Finish Should I Apply to a Meranti Window?
Meranti windows should be primed and painted with a quality exterior wood paint or primer-sealer system before installation. All faces, edges, and rebates should be coated to prevent moisture ingress. A minimum of two finish coats over a primer is recommended. Do not leave Meranti unfinished once installed, as prolonged exposure to moisture will cause swelling and paint adhesion failure.
What Size Opening Do I Need?
As a general guide, your structural opening should be approximately 10–15mm wider and taller than the window frame to allow for levelling, squaring, and fixing. For this window (574mm × 665mm), plan for a structural opening of approximately 586–590mm wide × 678–682mm high. Always confirm with your builder or installer before ordering.
